Patna,(BiharTimes): Police have to use lathis to control the crowd protesting against the election results of respective wards of the Patna Municipal Corporation on Saturday. All the shops in Boring Road and its vicinity were closed and ongoing construction work stopped by the district administration as the counting station was located in A N College campus. Vehicular traffic too was diverted from the Boring Road crossing for security reasons. |
Almost half of the 70 municipal councillors were elected for the first time for Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC). The result was announced on Saturday and the elections were held on May 17. Thirty-three of those who won are first timers.
Election in two of the 72 wards would be held on May 22.
Though the supporters of the victorious candidates celebrated on the streets many of those who lost strongly protested and complained of some foul play. They also alleged that the EVM machines were defective.
Counting started at 8am and concluded at 6.30pm.
According to Patna SP, Kim, a few candidates started opening the EVMs compelling police to resort to lathicharge to control them and their polling agents.
Incidentally, those who lost included former deputy mayor Santosh Mehta, who was defeated by Shivkumar in ward number 62. Jai Narain Sharma retained his seat this time too. Sharma has been winning the PMC elections since 1984.
Like in the last parliamentary and Assembly elections the defeated candidates of the Patna Municipal Corporation and other corporations and municipalities of the state too directed their anger against the EVMs. However, the election authorities rejected their allegations.
