Nitish govt has spent only 1 to 2 per cent of SC/ST budget: Punia
Patna,(BiharTimes): The National Schedule Castes Commission Chairman P L Punia on Tuesday charged the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar with ignoring welfare of the weaker sections by spending merely one to two per cent of the total budget meant for them.
Talking to reporters in Patna he said only one to two per cent of the total budget meant for welfare of Schedule Castes is being actually spent in Bihar.
Punia, who is on a two-day tour to review functioning of projects for the welfare of the weaker sections, said the state government is duty bound to spend at least 16 per cent of the Rs 28,000 crore outlay for running schemes for welfare of SCs and STs but in reality it is spending not more than one to two per cent.
He said that though there is good prospects for SCs in the special component plan in the 11th Five Year Plan, the Bihar government till March 31, 2012 had spent only 0.95 per cent of the total outlay.
Punia said while there are a large number of hostels for the SC students all over the country, in Bihar their number is only 143.
He said though the Bihar government claimed that it had banned scavenging yet according to a survey report there are 82,000 dry toilets in the state which cannot be cleared by machine and this shows SC people were involved in scavenging.
