Rampant corruption in higher education, concedes Bihar minister

Patna,(BiharTimes): State Education Minister Prashant Kumar Shahi said on Saturday that he was ashamed of rampant corruption and other malpractices prevailing in higher education in the state.
Speaking at a function in the S K Memorial College in Nawada he said corruption is so much rampant in the higher education in Bihar that the college and university teachers had to pay bribe for seeking promotion, transfer and other benefits.

He said he had no problem in making a candid confession before you that students had to pay bribe for seeking enrolment in PhD classes. The teachers too have to pay bribe for transfer, promotion and related benefits.

Incidentally, his public statement over corruption in his department came on the day when the Chancellor appointed eight Vice-Chancellors to different universities with six of them being the same persons whose appointments were scrapped by the high court two months ago.

The state government and Raj Bhawan have been at loggerhead over the appointment of VCs. The Governor has repeatedly been blamed for arbitrarily appointing VCs and Pro-VCs without holding consultations with it as per the provisions of the Bihar State Universities Act, 1976 and the Patna University Act, 1976.
