Ravi Shankr for law on conversions, says development main
plank of Union govt
Patna,(BiharTimes): Stating that the main plank of the
Narendra Modi government is good governance and development,
and not religious conversions, as some friends in the
opposition are making it out Union communication and
information technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday
said that there should be a law on religious conversions in
the country.
Speaking a day after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement on
the issue the minister said that the approach of opposition
on religious conversions was dictated by rank politics.
Ravi Shankar said the government wanted a consensus on
religious conversions, but the opposition was running away
even from a debate on the issue.
Indirectly referring to Nitish Kumar’s statement on ‘ghar
wapsi’ he said some opposition leaders of Bihar, who have
been repeatedly rejected by the people, are again trying to
raise the emotive issue of religious conversions, but they
would be left disappointed by the people.
The minister, who is a senior lawyer too, said, according to
the constitutional scheme on religious conversions everyone
is free to pursue any religion but without allurement.
Quoting Article 25 of Constitution he said everyone is
equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right to
freely profess, practise and propagate religion, but does not
include a right to forcible conversions.
