Patna, April 21 (BiharTimes): Senior JD(U) leader Shravan Kumar has been elected as the leader of the party's legislative group, marking a significant political development in Bihar. The decision was finalized by JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, who had earlier been authorized by party legislators to take the final call.
The announcement follows a meeting of JD(U) MLAs held earlier this week in Patna, where a consensus was reached to empower Nitish Kumar to choose the legislative party leader. Acting on this mandate, Kumar approved Shravan Kumar's name, reinforcing his trust in the seasoned leader.
Shravan Kumar, a prominent face from Nalanda, has built a remarkable electoral track record. Representing the Nalanda Assembly constituency since 1995, he secured his eighth consecutive victory in the 2025 Assembly elections - a rare political feat that underlines his strong grassroots connect and sustained public support.
Known for his close association with Nitish Kumar, Shravan Kumar has been part of the leader's political journey since the early days of the Samata Party, founded in 1994 by Nitish Kumar and George Fernandes. Over the years, he has held key ministerial responsibilities and remained a trusted figure within the party.
The legislative party meeting, held at 7 Circular Road in Patna, lasted around 15 minutes but proved decisive. Senior leaders, including Union Minister Lalan Singh and party leader Sanjay Jha, were present.
Deputy Chief Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav initiated the proposal to authorize Nitish Kumar to select the legislative party leader, which was unanimously accepted.
Reacting to the development, Nishant Kumar welcomed the decision and congratulated Shravan Kumar, calling it a positive step for the party.
Shravan Kumar's stature within JD(U) has grown steadily over the years. His recent upgrade to Y+ category security further indicates his increasing political importance and visibility in the state's leadership landscape.
With his appointment as legislative party leader, JD(U) signals continuity, experience, and organizational stability at a time of transition in Bihar's political framework. Shravan Kumar is now expected to play a crucial role in coordinating legislative strategy and strengthening the party's position in the Assembly.
