Govt warns road construction firms, asks them to perform

Patna, (Bihar Times): Even as the private firms engaged in the road construction works in Bihar is getting threatening call––and even getting killed––from the ruling party MLAs the state government had asked the two central government agencies to perform or quit. The ultimatum has been served to IRCON and CPWD. They have been asked to show result within two months or get prepared to go. The two agencies have been asked to construct 2035 kilometres of state highways.

While IRCON is working on 329 kms roads in Darbhanga, Samastipur, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali the CPWD is engaged in the construction of 1705 kms of state highways in remaining districts of the state. It is woking on 30 different projects.

According to the road construction minister, Nand Kishore Yadav though these firms are to complete their assigned job by December 2008 and March 2009 the pace with which they are working clearly shows that they would not complete it by the deadline. The minister was in particular critical of IRCON, a subsidiary of Indian Railways.

The warning to these two agencies is being interpreted as a move to divert the attention from the killing of a private firm employee engaged in the road construction work in Siwan two days back. Similarly Gammon India last week lodged a case against Janata Dal (United) MLA, Neeraj Kumar Singh  alias Babloo for demanding extortion money.
