Patna, (Bihar Times): In a significant departure from
the earlier stand the Union government warned the
states like Maharashtra, Assam etc of Centre’s
intervention if the attacks on outsiders living and
working there are not stopped immediately. It is the
responmsibility of the states to protect the rights
and interest of the people, who have come there for
work or settle.
This was stated by the newly appointed Union minister
of state for home affairs, Dr Shakeel Ahmed, at a
function organized by the Youth Congress in Sadaquat
Ashram on Saturday. He said that the Center would not
tolerate violence and discrimination against the
Hindi-speaking people, especially the Biharis in these
states. Incidentally Maharashtra and Assam are
Congress-ruled states. Dr Ahmed said that the
Constitution guarantees right to work or own property
in any part of the country and as such no one has the
right to humiliate or indulge in violence against
anyone. The state government should keep such forces
in a tight leash.
In another function on Saturday night in
Emarat-e-Sharaiah Dr Ahmed assured the Muslims not to
fear as they are not terrorists. The UPA government
has, under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan
Singh, reposed full faith on the community by
appointing a Muslim as the minister of state for home
affairs, he said.
