Patna, (Bihar Times): The deputy chief minister, Sushil
Kumar Modi, said that the state government would issue
identity cards to migrant Bihari workers living
outside the state.
Replying to a question of Nawal Kishore Yadav of the
RJD in the legislative council he said that the cards
would not be mandatory for all workers. Only those who
apply would get the cards, he added.
Stating that the existing Inter-State Migrants Labour
Act, 1979, has many discrepancies and did not meet the
requirement Modi said there was no provision for
issuing any identity card. The state had asked Centre
to bring suitable amendments in the Act. The
amendments would ensure more protection and safety of
migrant workers.
In case of the death of any migrant worker, the
government gives a grant of Rs one lakh to his
dependants, he added. Modi also said the government
has appointed a joint commissioner-rank official
(labour department)) in Delhi for better coordination
with migrant workers.
Earlier, Nawal Kishore Yadav said that in absence of
identity cards migrant workers were facing problems.
He requested the chairman to issue necessary directives in this regard.
