Number of tigers in Bihar comes down to 23

Patna, (Bihar Times): While the population of tigers in the country as got reduced from 4,400 five years back to 1,400 late in 2005 the figure of the state has come down from 56 to 23 in the same period.

According to reports as many as 33 tigers have gone missing from Valmiki Tiger Reserve, the only tiger reserve in the state, in just four years.

Since poaching is thriving in the India-Nepal border area it is difficult to keep track on the activities of the poachers. The CAG report, which came out last year, could not say as to how the number has gone down so much.

Though the Valmiki forest is guarded round the clock yet the recovery of tiger and deer skin by the Sashtra Suraksha Bal jawans say some other story.

A poacher, who wished not to be quoted, explained to a television channel reporter recently as to how the tigers are trapped in the net and than beaten to death by stones and iron rod.

The government machinery has failed to come up to tackle the challenge posed by the poachers. The government officials concede that it is difficult to keep a watch on their movements as the region falls close to the international border.
