Inaugurating the Mukhiya Mantri Kanya Vivah Yojana at
Shri Krishna Memorial Hall in Patna the first woman
President of the country said that the government
policies and programmes should be women-centric as no
country could grow without paying attention to half of
its population.
State governor R S Gavai, who also spoke on the
occasion, said that Bihar was perhaps the first state
in the country to give 50 per cent reservation to
women in the local bodies’ election.
Agreeing with the President’s view the chief minister
Nitish Kumar said that he was also in favour of giving
physical training to the girls so that they could
counter the eve-teasers on the street. He said that
Bihar was fast heading towards the total empowerment
of women and that the Kanya Vivah Yojana was a step in
that direction. He also cited the example of 50 per
cent reservation for women in local bodies’ election.
The President also flew to Shanti Stupa in Vaishali
district and later also bowed her head before Takht
Harmandir Saheb in Patna City. She also inaugurated
the the International Conference on Hyperthermia in
Mahavir Cancer Sansthan. She left for Delhi late in
the evening.
