High Court lawyers abstain from the court work

Patna, (Bihar Times): Protesting agains the whopping increase in the court fees about 8,000 registered lawyers of the Patna high court on Thursday abstained from the court duty. They will continue their agitation on Friday and will march to the state assembly at 11:00 am. The lawyers are upset because they were not at all taken into confidence.

Earlier on February 25, while presenting the budget the deputy chief minister, Sushil Kumar Modi, announced huge increase in the court fees. For example now a person will have to pay four times more for filing a Public Interest Litigation––from Rs 250 to 1,000. Similarly, the fee for wakalatnama, affidavit etc were also hiked.

The hike will not only hit the poor litigants much it will also discourage many social activists from filing PIL, which of late, is proving to be a big embarrassment for the government.
