Patna, (Bihar Times): For decades it was known as Bihar Institute of Technology. Then after the creation of Jharkhand in November 2000 it converted into Birsa Institute of Technology. Yet even then there used to be some seats reserved for the students of Bihar.
Now the last trace of Bihar is being wiped out from the Sindri-based BIT, one of the premier engineering colleges of eastern India. The Jharkhand government has refused to extend the quota for Bihari students for some more years as proposed by the Bihar government.
In all 251 Bihari students used to get admitted every year. But from this academic session these seats would be filled up by the students from Jharkhand.
The director, technical education, Jharkhand government, Arun Kumar, is quoted in newspaper as to having said that after thorough discussions in the department, the state government has decided not to extend the quota for students of Bihar. All the 680 seats of BIT, Sindri, would be filled up by local students.
Till now 251 seats were reserved for Bihar students following a Jharkhand High Court order as a temporary arrangement till Bihar revamped its technical education after the creation of the new state.
While the news came as a big relief for the engineering aspirants of Jharkhand, as the state lacks private technical colleges, Bihar is bound to suffer. The counselling of Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board will start from July 30 and end on August 16.
