Patna, (Bihar Times): The state government has planned to approach National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), a subsidiary of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, for registering the details of Zardalu, a fibre-less variety of delicious mango grown in Bihar, especially in the eastern region.
The registration of the geographical indicators would help establish Zardalu as an exclusive produce of the state.
The horticulture department of the Sabour(Bhagalpur)-based Bihar Agriculture College has been asked to provide details of the variety of the mango. Besides, the scientists and teachers of the deparment have been invited to participate in the meeting in which representatives of the Rajendra Agriculture University, Pusa are also likely to participate. The registration of the geographical indicators would help in protecting the rights of the mango-growers of the state in the long term.
The principal of BAC, Dr S K Chandra, told a section of Press that the details of the variety after being registered at NBPGR would help provide for the composite information about the variety both at national and international levels.
Notwithstanding high demand and relatively long shelf life the export potential of Zardalu has remained unexplored so far.
