Patna, (Bihar Times): With the new academic session
about to start the students’ wing of the Maharashtra
Navnirman Sena is keeping a close watch on college
admissions to outsiders in different institutes of the
state.
Prakash Dhamdhere, spokesperson of the MNS Pune unit
is quoted in a newspaper as having said that Sena
would take care that Marathi students get preference
in the admission process. Since Pune has a number of
management, engineering and medical insitutites it
attracts thousands of students from outside
Maharashtra every year. Besides Pune, thousands of
students take admission in colleges in Mumbai, Nagpur,
Amravati, Thane etc.
Reports said that Raj Thackeray will soon be
conducting a meeting in this regard and will give
instructions to the party workers. In his May 25 rally
in Pune he had said that the MNS would agitate if the
institutes neglect Marathi students.
The Sena would be sending letters to the colleges
demanding that preference be given to Marathi students
in admissions. Agitation would be launched if they do
not comply with the rules. There are about 150
management colleges in the state––131 of them are
privately run unaided institutes. Besides, there are
156 unaided engineering colleges in Maharashtra.
The population of outsiders in these engineering and
management colleges is around 30 per cent. However,
this figure is not too much in comparison to many
other states. As per rules the private unaided
institutes can admit 15 per cent students who make the
All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) merit
list. Besides, there is 20 per cent quota in
management colleges.
Clearing the confusion created by the MNS, the
officials of private unaided institutes say that the
AIEEE quota is approved by the government and it is
filled according to the norms. The students from
Maharashtra also feature in this quota. The admissions
are based on merit and many Marathi students get
admission under this quota in the reputed institutes
in the city.
