Patna, (Bihar Times): Against the expectation mangoes
have stormed the market in a big way, especially in
the eastern Bihar districts of Bhagalpur and Banka,
where it is selling as low as Rs 15 per kilo.
Though mangoes grow every alternate years it was
expected that this year the flow would be very slow.
But that was not to be.
Experts, however, attribute this unexpected growth of
mango this year to the climate change.
They say that climate changes are causing a favourable
impact on fruit-bearing pattern of the mango trees in
the state, especially in the Bhagalpur and Banka
districts.
According to a preliminary study done by the Bihar
Agriculture College, Sabour, the change in
fruit-bearing pattern in the mango trees of the region
has been witnessed in the last couple of years.
S K Chandra, the principal of the Bihar Agriculture
College is quoted as saying that fruiting is observed
in alternate years. However, trees which bore fruits
in the previous years have fruited again this year.
Thus like the last year this time too there is a
bumper crop of mango. Zardalu (the yellow variety) is
selling at even Rs 15 per kilo. The old Bhagalpur
division is known all over India and even abroad for
various variety of mangoes. Mangoes are even exported
to other countries from here.
Chandra said that, it was felt, the change in
temperature and humidity was causing change in the
nature of trees to bear fruit.
