Patna, June 27 : Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi plans to write a book on the Emergency so that it can throw light on "many untold stories and interesting events that are not known to the younger generation".
“I am writing a book on the experiences and harsh reality during the Emergency,” said Modi, who described the Emergency as a black chapter of Indian history after Independence.
Modi claims that his book on the Emergency will throw light on many untold stories and interesting events that are not known to the younger generation.
He said that his book will be a jail diary and it will be published by next year.
Modi, who is senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, was a student leader in the movement led by Jai Prakash Narayan in Bihar against imposition of the Emergency.
The Emergency denotes the 21-month period between June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977 when then president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, upon advice by then prime minister Indira Gandhi declared a State of Emergency in India under Article 352 of the Constitution. It is considered to be one of the most controversial periods in the history of Independent India.
He said that state government plans to introduce a chapter on the Emergency in the new syllabus of the schools. “At present the younger generation was not aware or informed about misuse of laws during the Emergency and several anti-democratic steps taken to suppress people's rights,” said Modi.
Modi said that state government has begun process to identify people who had participated in the movement against Emergency to provide them help. About 60,000 applications have been received.
