Patna, (Bihar Times): The ruling National Democratic
Alliance in Bihar snatched two of the eight seats from
the UPA in the elections to the state legislative
council. It won five seats while the RJD, CPM and CPI
won one each. The Janata Dal (United) got three and
the BJP two seats. Surprisingly, the Congress drew
blank.
Janata Dal (United)’s Vinod Chaudhary wrested
Darbhanga graduates seat from Congress nominee Dilip
Chaudhary defeating him by 2,884 votes. Neeraj Kumar
of the same party defeated RJD’s Azad Gandhi by 5,026
votes in the contest for Patna graduates’
constituency. The defeat of the two UPA sitting
candidates came as a blow as in this hour of crisis in
the NDA it was expected to do somewhat better.
BJP’s Narendra Prasad Singh retained his Tirhut
Teachers’ constituency defeating CPI’s Sanjay Singh by
1,127 votes. CPM’s Basudev Singh, however, secured a
third term from Darbhanga Teachers’ seat defeating his
nearest BJP rival Harinarain Singh by 1,898 votes,
while RJD’s Naval Kishore Rai too got elected for a
third term from Patna Teachers’ constituency beating
JD(U)’s Janardan Prasad Singh by 708 votes.
Veerkeshwar Prasad Singh of BJP earned for himself
another term defeating his nearest Independent rival
Yogendra Mahto by 7,563 votes for Kosi Graduates’
constituency.
Similarly CPI’s Kedar Pandey defeated his Congress
rival Chandrama Singh by 403 votes to retain Saran
Teachers’ seat in a keenly fought contest. JD(U)'s
Devesh Chandra Thakur retained Tirhut Graduates’ seat
beating his nearest RJD rival Veena Devi by 1,753
votes.
