Patna, (Bihar Times): Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday called for refurbishing the image of the police.

Addressing the Third Annual Police Conference here he asked the cops to desist from human rights violation, adopt pro-poor approach and sensitize public to avoid gory incidents of mob violence such as lynching. He also asked the police to maintain social and communal harmony.

Not only that he appealed to the police to be partner in the development of the state. He, however, added that the security provided to the agencies employed in the various development work should not be misused. The police should also help maintain the quality of the construction work going on in the state.

The chief minister expressed satisfaction over the performance of the police in controlling crime. He stressed the need of speedy trial to overcome crimes. Speedy trial, especially in the case related to the Arms Act, had good impact on the state, he said.



Chief secretary, RJM Pillai, home secretary Afzal Amanullah new director general of police, Shiv Chandra Jha, police officers from the rank of DGPs to the superintendents of police attended the conference.

The Police Conference has become a routine affairs of sort in the state. The chief minister’s statement on the human rights violation and lynching should be read in the background of the repeated incidents of mob taking law into their hands. Besides, after Uttar Pradesh, whose population is almost double, Bihar has seen highest number of custodial deaths.
