Patna, (Bihar Times): Inclement weather had its
negative impact on the export of litchi this year. Against the 100 metric tonnes exported in 2007 this
year it is impossible to achieve even one-third of
that figure.
According to reports the export of litchis start after
May 21, but this year the work in this direction has
not began. A large number of litchis have turned sour
because of the prevailing weather condition. The
export quality litchis are more delicious and should
have the diameter of six cm.
The lone exporter of litchi in the state. Raj Kumar
Kedia, said that 40 per cent of the litchis were
destroyed because of the excessive heat in April and
now the rains have put cold water on their plan to
export it in huge amount.
Not to speak of small growers even the big growers are
feeling the heat of bad weather condition in the
state. The export of litchis began a few years back
and last year it reached the record of 100 metric
tonnes.
Litchis are grown all along river Gandak in North
Bihar. Muzaffarpur and Hajipur are known all over
India and abroad for litchi.
