Patna, May 31 : A woman in a Bihar village refused to marry after the family members and relatives of the groom turned up drunk, caused trouble and abused her family members.
Savita Kumari, in her 20s, daughter of Ram Avatar Sah of Begusarai district's Char ke Gachi village, about 125 km from here, stunned everybody Friday when she refused to marry Amardip Sah after she saw his close family members and relatives, who were drunk, create trouble, misbehave, abuse her family members and even thrash some of them.
"She refused to marry the man, who belongs to a family of drunkards and trouble makers," her father said.
According to reports reaching here, what angered the bride was that Amardip supported his drunken relatives when they were busy creating trouble and abusing her family.
Her family held Amardip and his brother hostage for a few hours and freed them only after the bride's family was paid the money they had spent on the marriage.
In the last one year several cases were reported across Bihar when girls refused to marry drunken grooms at the last moment.
Women in Bihar lag far behind men in terms of crucial human development indicators. The gender ratio was 921 women against 1,000 men. The female population is 39.7 million as against 43.2 million males. The women's literacy rate is just over half of that of men.
