Patna, (Bihar Times): The deputy chief
minister-cum-finance minister, Sushil Kumar Modi,
clarified on Saturday that ½ per cent stamp duty
proposed in the state’s budget for 2008-09 presented
last week in the state assembly was not a new levy as
had been erroneously printed in it.

He told a section of newsmen on Saturday that in fact
it constituted a reduction of existing slabs of stamp
duty on leasing out immoveable property for various
durations.
The proposed stamp duty will be charged on all houses,
flats and buildings in Bihar, which are let out on
rent for any period of time. This will encourage
people to get rent agreements registered.
Another important clarification is that the new stamp
duty rate would not be applicable to any vacant land
that is given on rent along with any house, building
or flat. In such cases the stamp duty would be levied
at existing rates, that is, three to six per cent.
